The story of Harvest Meats starts back in 1928, in the village of Rhein, Saskatchewan. There, Alexander Propp started making sausages using family recipes that had been passed down through several generations. In 1932, the family moved to Yorkton, and established Propp's Meat Market and Groceteria, where sausage making continued full-scale.
By the early 1950s Alexander's sons had outgrown the location. The eldest son, Edward, became company president and spearheaded the construction of an abbatoir and processing plant called Mid-West Packers, which produced Harvest-brand products. The plant was expanded several times to meet increasing demand. By 1977 the first sales were made to national retail chains. In 1987, management of the company had passed to Kenn Propp, a grandson of the original founder. In 1989, construction started on a new plant in Yorkton. Kenn, who grew up in the industry, restructured the company and brought in additional management with extensive industry experience. The product line was expanded to include more of the European flavours for which it had become well known. The company's 120 products now include 50 different varieties of sausage.
In 1998, Harvest Meats merged with Fletcher's Fine Foods and joined the Premium Brands family known for its extensive lines of high quality meat and sausage products. Harvest Meats' emphasis on quality has given the company sufficient depth to compete with all specialty sausage houses, and its strong emphasis on service and product development keeps it at the forefront of the rapidly-changing meat industry. |
